In the 1950s, Harlow conducted a series of experiments on baby monkeys to study their attachment behaviors. He found that when deprived of contact with their mothers, these monkeys exhibited severe distress and abnormal behaviors.

Building on this research, psychiatrist John Bowlby developed Attachment Theory in the 1960s. This theory explains how early childhood experiences with caregivers shape an individual’s ability to form relationships later in life. Bowlby argued that individuals who experienced neglect or abuse during childhood were more likely to struggle with social isolation and loneliness as adults.

In the 1970s, psychologist Robert Weiss conducted a study on loneliness among older adults, which further contributed to the development of Social Isolation Theory.
