NatGeo to Air Bin Laden Takedown Movie Two Days Before Election

05 Oct

This is not the Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker) film Zero Dark Thirty, which is set to premiere December 19. This is the National Geographic Channel’s first feature-length film “inspired by true events,” and is titled Seal Team Six: The Raid on Osama Bin Laden. It is set to air November 4 and be available for live-streaming on Neflix the next day.

“Seal Team Six” is a re-creation of the May 2011 killing of the terrorism mastermind, which was arguably the crowning national security achievement of President Obama’s term in office. Scheduling the premiere shortly before the election may turn the film into a political object, though a National Geographic Channel executive said Thursday night that politics was not a factor in the timing.

Instead, said Howard T. Owens, the channel’s president, said Nov. 4 was selected “to take advantage of our fall schedule” of shows, which will have their premieres in the days and weeks after “Seal Team Six.”

“Other than being commercially opportunistic, we weren’t considering the election,” Mr. Owens said.

Right. Never entered his mind.

Look, I think it’s fair to say that a cable movie about the bin Laden raid a couple of days before the polls open is not about to change anyone’s mind. If the fact that bin Laden was dropped into the sea with a bullet through his eye socket under Obama’s watch hasn’t moved people to jump on the incumbent’s bandwagon by now, I doubt this “re-creation” (will there be puppets?) will prove decisive in that regard.

Plus, the film seems to focus most heavily on the Seals and their mettle, as it should. Although I do wonder what inspired the parts of the movie that are not based on true events. And you have to love that it’s produced by the Weinstein Company, which gave us Michael Moore’s mockumentary Fahrenheit 911. How patriotic everyone’s become all of a sudden! Have to protect the Motherland from the bad guys, doncha know! (Nota bene: Harvey Weinstein is a big Obama fundraiser.)

As for the Bigelow flick, which I’m assuming will be the superior artistic achievement, here’s a trailer:
