Why Most New Yorkers Would Kill to Be in a Norwegian Prison

22 Aug

Look at all that room! And exercise equipment! That Anders Breivik is one lucky duck!

Now these are just temporary digs should Breivik be found insane. In that case, he’s most probably headed here: Halden, the “World’s Nicest Prison.”

Oh, we have so much to learn from Scandinavia — truly the most civilized place on earth.

It would be really sad if they find Breivik insane. He seems very lucid and aware of what he did. They might find him insane because they believe people are basically good and nice so if Breivik isn’t those things he must be nuts. No, he’s evil. Wicked deep down and he doesn’t deserve a nice, Ikea prison cell for his evils.

It is a fairly well known fact that Norwegian drunk-driving laws are very strict. It is less well known that about half of the people in Norway are under sentence for driving drunk, but have to wait years for their turn to spend a few months in one of those relaxing prisons. That probably accounts in part for how nice they are. The average Norwegian figures, “I’ll probably have to do time in one, one of these days.”

You’re kind of down on Scandinavians today, aren’t you?

It was purely a coincidence. I was afraid it would come across that way, which is why I decided to shift gears and focus on local issues, like how I live in a death trap. I bet Norway, Breivik notwithstanding, has fewer murders per decade than Wilmington had this morning.

It should be noted that my wife is partly of Scandinavian extraction. At first we thought it was Norwegian, and now it looks to be Swedish.
